Seychelles Trip - Praslin Island - May 2003
(click any picture to get enlargement)

From LaDigue we took a taxi to the dock and then boarded the ferry back to Praslin. A taxi met us and took us to our hotel.  It was nice to have such a short travel day.

This island is fairly big, about 15 miles long.  The  roads were in excellent shape and there were many vehicles.  We used the buses to get around even though the service was less than perfect.

Each building contained two chalets which were built right into the rock ==>

Our chalet had a nice beach view, and we were almost the only guests.

The beach-side breakfast was nice, but it would already be getting warm ...

... so we relaxed on the beach until the hottest part of the day was gone.

It was very pleasant in the evening, especially during the full moon.

The snorkeling at our beach was so nice we didn't have to Scuba dive.  The barrier reef was about a ten minute swim from shore.  At the end of the bay it dropped off to a large rock formation (see pic at right).  We would stay deep to see the bigger fish; including  sharks & mantas.  We would go more shallow to see the colorful fish.  Each day was a bit different, based on sunlight, currents, and the tides; most excellent!

Jay made many " friends" on the beach ...

... with which he could play frisbee or fetch with ...

... or have a viscious game of tug-of-war (Jay lost).

We took a bus to Lazio Beach, which is currently named the "most beautiful beach in the world".

We didn't get to spend a lot of time at the beach but it was very nice.

If you thought the scenes above were the same, you were correct; same with the ones to the right.
The difference is that one was taken with a digital camera and the other with a conventional camera.  Which is which??

This island also has the ONLY  Coco De Mer
 forest in the world
 (basically a big coconut).

The trees are quite special; it sprouts from
the ground with very big leaves.  After 15 years it finally develops a trunk and can live for a thousand years.

The nut of the tree is also very special ...

.. as it has the shape of a  female's mid-section.

Each takes 5-10 years to grow and sells for $1000!

We had a nice walk in the woods and found some "native" head-dresses.

As our vacation came to an end we boarded the small jet and flew back to Mahe, passing over more small islands.  We then boarded the jumbo jet back to South Africa ...
...  and to winter  :(
