Lori Visits South Africa - Blyde Canyon - Nov 2003 (click any picture to get enlargement)
The next item on the itinerary for Lori
&
Dave's visit was to head towards Kruger Park.
Along
the way we hoped
to get a good view of the
Blyde Canyon area, do
some shopping at the
local craft markets, and
then end up at a private
game reserve next to
Kruger Park.
From Pretoria we drove about four hours east.
The rolling grasslands slowly hot
more hilly ...
... and then turned into
a mountainous area.
We came upon a large
cliff and had to go up.
As we got higher we could see a distant
valley...
... and near the top we could see a vast Canyon.
This area is called Blyde Canyon and is similar
to the Grand Canyon
in the United States.
The biggest difference between the
canyons
is that Blyde has only one side. It goes from
a high plateau down
to a low plateau.

This little river has cut
this big gorge over time.
This reservoir marks
the end of the river...
.. but Lori & Dave decided
it' was too far too dive
in.
At a few locations
around the canyon ...
... the government set
up markets where ...
... you could purchase local arts & crafts.
The beadwork & dolls were very colorful
...
... but the carved animals got the most
attention.
After success at shopping we continued on our
trip.
New-style housing for some farm workers.
A "cat wash".
After getting through the mountains we headed for a game reserve.
